When to Golf in Hawaii
Seasons, trade winds and the tee times that make the most of both.

Hawaii has two broad seasons. The drier season runs roughly from May to October; the wetter season from about November to April. Temperatures change only a little through the year, so the bigger differences are rain, wind and how much the sun bites.
Where you play matters more than when. Leeward (west and south-facing) coasts sit in the rain shadow of the mountains and get far less rain than windward (northeast-facing) coasts. That is why most resort golf is on leeward shores: Ko Olina on Oahu, Wailea and Kaanapali on Maui, the Kohala Coast on the Big Island and Poipu on Kauai. For forecasts and seasonal outlooks, the National Weather Service in Honolulu is the official source.
Trade Winds and Your Game
- Trade winds blow from the northeast most days, strongest in the afternoon and in summer.
- Into the wind, take more club and swing easier; a lower ball flight helps.
- Downwind, the ball releases on firm leeward fairways, so plan for roll.
- Putts on exposed greens can move with the wind; take a wider stance.
- When the trades stop and southerly “Kona” winds arrive, it can feel humid and still, and the vog from Kilauea can drift west over the Big Island.

Tee Times, Crowds and Prices
| Time | What to expect |
|---|---|
| Early morning | Calmest wind, coolest air, most popular with locals and resort guests. Book ahead. |
| Midday | Hottest sun; wind building on coastal courses. |
| Afternoon / twilight | Often windiest; many courses offer later-day rates. Check sunset time, which is earlier in winter. |
Winter vs summer, side by side
In winter, northern swells reach the north shores of each island and showers are more frequent on windward coasts, but leeward resort courses usually stay playable; days are shorter, so twilight starts earlier. In summer, trade winds are steadier, rain is lower almost everywhere, and the sun is strong enough that a long walking round in the middle of the day is hard work.
Winter, from the Christmas holidays to spring break, is the busiest stretch for visitors, so book tee times and hotels early. Late spring and early fall are often quieter. Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best month for golf in Hawaii?
Golf is played year round. The drier months, roughly May to October, give the most predictable weather; winter brings more showers on windward coasts and bigger surf on north shores, but leeward resort courses often stay sunny.
How do the trade winds affect golf in Hawaii?
The trades usually blow from the northeast and often strengthen in the afternoon. Into the wind a hole can play several clubs longer, and crosswinds exaggerate any slice or hook. Morning rounds are usually calmer.
Is it too hot to golf in Hawaii in summer?
Temperatures are fairly steady through the year, but summer sun and humidity add up. Start early, drink often and use a cart if walking in the heat is hard for you.
