Kauai Golf: Check the Status First

Status as of 28 October 2026: Hurricane Lowell struck Kauai on 8 September 2026. Most Kauai state parks remain closed (Haena State Park reopened on 15 October with limits), and some roads and facilities are still being repaired. Courses are private businesses with their own timelines, so confirm each one is open before you plan around it, and check Hawaii State Parks (DLNR) for park access.

In normal times Kauai offers some of the most scenic golf in the islands, with courses on the north shore near Princeville and on the sunny south shore at Poipu.

Princeville Makai

On the north shore cliffs near Hanalei, with mountain and ocean views. The north shore is lush because it is wet, especially in winter.

Poipu Bay

On the south shore beside the Poipu resort area, usually sunnier and drier than the north.

Wailua Golf Course

A county-run course on the east side near Lihue, popular with residents.

Others

Kauai also has courses near Lihue and inland; a specialist can confirm which are open and suit your base.

Planning Kauai golf while the island recovers

Visitor spending helps an island recover, but only where businesses are ready for guests. If you are booking for the coming months, choose flexible or refundable rates, ask the hotel and course directly what is open, and avoid closed parks and damaged roads even if you see others ignoring the signs. If your dates are flexible, a specialist can watch for reopenings and adjust the plan, or move part of the trip to another island.

Lanai: One Course, Total Quiet

Lanai is a small, quiet island with one golf course currently listed as open to play: Manele Golf Course, a Jack Nicklaus design on the cliffs above Hulopoe Bay, near the Four Seasons resort at Manele. Several holes play over the ocean and rock, so wind and nerves both matter.

A second course in the cool uplands near Lanai City has been closed and its status is unclear, so do not plan around it without confirming. Lanai is reached by small plane or, when running, a passenger ferry from Maui; check current service before you book.

See Best of Lanai for the rest of the island, from Lanai City to the four-wheel-drive roads.

Kauai and Lanai Golf Questions

Can I play golf on Kauai right now?

Some Kauai businesses have reopened since Hurricane Lowell, but conditions change week to week. Confirm with each course and with the county and state before you book, and consider travel insurance that covers trip interruption.

Is Lanai worth it for golf?

For a quiet, high-end stay with one spectacular course, yes. If you want many different courses, Maui or the Big Island suit you better.
