Golf + Resort Trips: Building the Stay Around the Rounds

Many visitors combine a few rounds with a resort stay rather than a pure golf trip. Most of the Hawaii golf courses that welcome visitors are attached to, or close to, a resort area, which makes this easy to arrange. Done well, that means choosing a resort area with courses close by, planning golf mornings and beach or sightseeing afternoons, and keeping non-golfers just as happy.

Pick the resort area first

Ko Olina or Turtle Bay on Oahu, Kapalua, Kaanapali or Wailea on Maui, the Kohala Coast on the Big Island, Poipu or Princeville on Kauai, Manele on Lanai. Each has courses within a short drive.

Ask about guest privileges

Some resorts offer their guests advance tee times or preferred times at an affiliated course. Ask before you book.

Mix in a second island

A week often splits well between two islands: city plus golf on Oahu, then resort golf on Maui or the Big Island.

Leave days off

Plan at least one day without golf for snorkeling, a drive or a luau.

Sample Shapes of a Golf Week

These are starting points, not packages. Your specialist adjusts them for your budget, your flights and the courses that are open on your dates.

Trip styleHow it might look
Golf-heavySeven nights on the Kohala Coast or in Wailea, four or five rounds, one volcano or Haleakala day.
BalancedThree nights on Oahu (one round, Honolulu sights), four nights on Maui (two or three rounds, beach days).
Quiet splurgeFour nights on Lanai with rounds at Manele, followed by a few nights on Maui.
Couples, one golferWailea or Kaanapali, where the beach walk, spa and restaurants keep the non-golfer busy.

Two or three rounds fit easily into a balanced week.

Questions to Ask Before You Book a Golf Resort

  • Which courses are closest, and how long is the drive at the time I want to tee off?
  • Do hotel guests get advance booking or preferred tee times?
  • Is there a resort fee, and what does it include?
  • Are rental clubs available at the course, including left-handed sets?
  • What is there for non-golfers: a calm swimming beach, a pool, a spa, walking paths?
  • What is the cancellation policy if weather or an island-wide event changes plans?

Money-Saving Ideas

  • Travel in the quieter shoulder months instead of the winter holidays.
  • Look at later-day tee times, which many courses price lower.
  • Compare a resort stay with a nearby condo; see Rooms Cheap for rates.
  • Ask your specialist to price the whole trip together; packages sometimes beat booking each piece alone.

Coming by ship instead? Hawaii cruises pause in port for a day, which leaves time for a round at some ports; see Hawaii Cruise for cruise vs land trade-offs, and ask about golf excursions when you book.
